Scharff Weisberg's Staging and Media Resource Center divisions collaborated on the recent Museum of the Moving Image Salute to John Travolta and the USA Network special of the event. Scharff Weisberg Staging supplied video projection for the live show; the MRC provided post-production services which included formatting the projected video clips as well as preparing additional visuals and graphics projected during the dinner.
John Travolta was saluted by the Museum of the Moving Image at its annual black-tie gala on Sunday, December 5, 2004 in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. The show aired on USA Network on December 12. The highlight of the evening, as always, was the screening of moments from the honoree's long and diverse career, presented by a stellar group of friends and colleagues, including Kathy Bates, James Gandolfini, Kelly Preston, Kyra Sedgwick, Jeff Conaway, Didi Conn, Ron Pallilo, Jeremy Piven and Oprah Winfrey.
Scharff Weisberg's Staging division provided video projection services for the event. The company incorporated the use of two Digital Projection 28SX video projectors with a light output of 15,000 lumens to deliver an image of superior brightness and quality. The projection format was 16:9. "Unlike previous events for the Museum which incorporated the use of 35mm film projection in addition to video projection of clips, this event was solely video-projection based," says Scharff Weisberg Project Manager Tony Rossello. The staging division worked in conjunction with MRC to maximize the viewing area of the screen for the multiple aspect ratio clips provided by the Museum.
The MRC edited and formatted the film clips used in the live show working with footage provided to the Museum by the movie studios on Digital Betacam in letterbox, 4:3 and anamorphic aspect ratios. MRC's Josh Nissim explains. "We formatted everything to a 16:9 aspect ratio for proper display on the wide screen in the Waldorf ballroom. We also worked with the Museum to determine the edit decision list and the transitions for each clip. The MRC also provided editorial facilities for the Museum's promotional video that aired during the show."
In addition, the MRC worked in conjunction with 2x4, the Museum's graphic designers, to render, edit and format graphics projected during the dinner.
"It's always a pleasure to work with Scharff Weisberg," comments Rochelle Slovin, Director of the Museum and Executive Producer of the event and television special. "They are not only exemplary professionals but very collegial in helping us achieve our goals."
