SWI Lighting Fills Extensive Rental Needs of JKLD for Cartier and High-Profile Fashion Awards Show
August 4, 2004 — New York
The New York office of jkld, a top international lighting design and production company specializing in the luxury market, called upon Scharff Weisberg Lighting's extensive rental inventory and extraordinary servicing for two recent high-profile events. The company provided jkld with state-of-the-art equipment packages for a Cartier party launching a new line of watches and for the annual CFDA Fashion Awards Ceremony.
"Scharff Weisberg really came through for us on these two jobs," says Joe Saint, vice president of jkld and producer of both events, who regards Scharff Weisberg as the go-to lighting source for projects such as these. "The Cartier party was particularly challenging with the sheer quantities of equipment we required and last-minute additions we imposed."
Cartier hosted a party at the 26th Street Armory to mark the debut of a new line of watches and celebrate the continuing commemoration of 100 years of flight; Cartier has historic ties to aviation having designed the first wristwatch for pioneer aviator Santos Dumont.
Drawing upon its large inventory of LEDs Scharff Weisberg furnished approximately 700 hard-to-find Color Kinetics iColor Cove 12" LEDs which jkld president and lighting designer Jan Kroeze built into the party's architecture and decor to create a colorful and innovative ambiance and showcase an exciting presentation with two dramatic reveals. A Whole Hog with five DMX Universes supplied Kroeze with 2560 channels of control to facilitate color changes and elaborate chases for the reveals. A second Whole Hog was also on hand.
Additionally, Scharff Weisberg provided over 100 Source Four conventional fixtures, approximately 200 dimmers, Altman fresnels, a dozen MAC 200 Performance units, about a dozen Color Kinetics Color Blasts plus control cable, feeder cable and power supplies. Brendan Gray was the programmer for the event.
The CFDA Fashion Awards, held in several venues within the historic New York City Public Library, also had extensive lighting needs. Six 1.2K and two 575-watt HMI fresnels were deployed for the red carpet on the steps outside the building. Inside, jkld integrated approximately 40 Color Kinetics iColor Cove 6" LEDs and more than 500 iColor Cove 12s into the architecture and decor of the main entrance where guests enjoyed cocktails, Gottesman Hall where they dined, and the Celeste Bartos Forum where the awards ceremony was held.
Once again, Scharff Weisberg's LED inventory came in handy for Kroeze who finds himself "using LEDs more and more" as replacements for conventional lighting. "We only used a few Source Fours to light the podium speakers and award winners," he notes. Scharff Weisberg also supplied two Express 250 consoles, approximately 48 dimmers, control cable, feeder cable and power supplies for the event.
"Our ability to provide both Cartier and the CFDA Fashion Awards with fine results was due in large part to Scharff Weisberg's ability to deliver what we needed," says jkld's Saint. "They bent over backwards to make these events work."
